i ask you, knowing the dead cannot respond,

still i ask you, taylor,

my friend,

where did you go to die?

& why, & were you alone?

you weren’t headed to that square foot

all your too short life, you shined brightly,

& yet one square foot

where my breath will quit

waits also for me.

13 years since last we saw each other,

only for you to now rest beneath the earth

five hundred yards from my house.

may her bosom embrace you.

among us human becomings,

you sang with a honeyed-voice.

now you will sing among the angels.

i will be listening

In Memory of my friend and classmate, John Taylor Rankin (1981-2012).
